Author of the historical true crime works Woman at the Devil’s Door and the forthcoming Deadfall: Mountain Mysticism, Moonshine, and the Killing Rock Massacre, S.B. Long’s Blood, Bone, Breath, Earth, is a moving memoir chronicling her experiences as a sustainable farmer alongside her journey to find, and know, her birth family. Part meditation on adoption trauma and resilience, part love letter to the land, Long wrestles with the most fundamental of human needs: belonging and becoming.
An Associate Professor of English at Appalachian State University, Long’s academic research focuses on the intersections between sustainable farming, technology and women’s empowerment. She currently lives on a 13-acre organic farm in Eastern Tennessee with her husband, a professor of music, and a menagerie of rascally rescued animals.
Long is a graduate of The University of South Florida, Lancaster University, and Florida Southern College, and she recently obtained her culinary certificate from Leiths International School of Food and Wine in the United Kingdom. Long runs an underground supper club at her farm, focusing on elevating humble ingredients raised in her organic market garden and highlighting regional sustainable producers.
She is an active member in sustainable and organic farming communities and organizations throughout North Carolina and Tennessee and regularly writes on the importance of maintaining local foodways and sustainable farming practices on her blog www.thespadeandspoon.com.
Regal House is delighted to bring you S.B. Long’s memoir Blood, Bone, Breath, Earth in 2026.
