Winner of the 2022 Fugere Prize
Tara Deal is a New York writer of fiction, free verse, and urban fragments. She is the author of two novellas, That Night Alive (winner of the 2016 novella prize from Miami University Press) and Palms Are Not Trees After All (winner of the 2007 novella prize from Texas Review Press). Her work has appeared in magazines such as American Literary Review, Passages North, Sugar House Review, Tampa Review Online, Washington Square Review, and West Branch, among others. Her shortest story can be found in Hint Fiction (Norton).
Tara was born in Savannah, Georgia, and grew up in Columbia, South Carolina. After receiving an A.B. degree from Harvard (American History and Literature) and an M.A. from New York University (English), she worked as a book editor for many years.
